Scuba Diving Certifications: Open Water to Divemaster

Recreational scuba certifications follow a near-universal ladder. PADI is the largest agency, but SSI, NAUI, and SDI teach the same progression and their cards are widely recognized and cross-honored. You start with an entry-level course that certifies you to dive independently with a buddy, then add depth, skills, and if you want, a path toward working in the industry.

The levels below use the common names; ask any operator which agency they teach. Cards never expire, though a refresher is wise after a long layoff.
