A dive knife is safety gear first and a tool second. Underwater its real job is cutting: freeing yourself or a buddy from monofilament fishing line, kelp, netting, or a stray anchor line. For recreational scuba divers the right blade is small, corrosion resistant, and mounted somewhere you can reach it with either hand. It is not about size or menace. It is about a reliable cut when your hands are cold and your visibility is poor.

The market splits along two decisions. The first is blade material: cheap, keen 420 stainless steel, rustproof beta titanium, or Spyderco's specialized H1 and H2 steels that resist corrosion like titanium while cutting like steel. How we choose

We researched knives that recreational scuba divers can actually buy in the United States in 2026, then ranked them on the things that matter underwater: corrosion resistance, sheath security and one-hand release, cutting performance on line and webbing, mounting flexibility, and value for the street price. We leaned toward blunt tips and secure sheaths because entanglement, not stabbing, is the real hazard. The three tiers are set by typical current street price: budget covers knives under about $60, mid runs roughly $60 to $140, and premium sits above about $140, which in this category almost always means full titanium and a heavier-duty sheath. Higher price mostly buys corrosion immunity, better fit and finish, and a locking sheath that will not surrender the knife on a hard fin kick. This is an independent guide. Common questions

For most recreational divers, blunt. A blunt (or sheepsfoot) tip cuts line and webbing just as well, is far less likely to puncture a BC, drysuit, or your own hand, and doubles as a small pry bar. Choose a pointed tip only if you have a specific need to pierce, such as spearfishing tasks, and you are confident handling it.

Titanium never rusts and needs almost no maintenance, which is why it dominates the premium tier, but it holds an edge a bit less long and costs more. Stainless steel (usually 420) is cheaper and takes a keener edge, but you must rinse it in fresh water after every dive and dry or lightly oil it to prevent surface rust. If you dive saltwater often and hate upkeep, titanium pays off. If you dive occasionally and rinse your gear, quality stainless is a fine value. Spyderco's H1 and H2 steels are a third path: nearly rustproof like titanium, sharp like steel.

Rinse it in fresh water after every saltwater dive, including the sheath, then dry it fully. For stainless blades, a periodic wipe with a silicone-based lubricant or corrosion inhibitor helps. Do not store a knife wet in its sheath, which traps salt and moisture against the blade. Titanium and Spyderco's H1 and H2 knives are far more forgiving, but a rinse still keeps the sheath and straps healthy.

In the United States, a dive knife is treated as a bladed tool, so it belongs in checked luggage, never in your carry-on. A guarded line cutter is also safest packed in checked bags.
