Common questions

A regular duffel works for a first pool or shore session, but dive gear is heavy, wet, and salty in a way ordinary luggage is not built for. Dedicated dive bags use snag resistant mesh that drains and dries, reinforced bases that shrug off a wet boat deck, and oversized zippers and openings sized for fins and a BCD. If you only dive locally a few times a year you can get away with a plain duffel plus a cheap mesh sack, but anyone diving regularly or flying to dive will get more life and less mildew from a purpose built bag.

Buy for how you dive most. If your diving is mostly local shore and boat trips, start with a mesh backpack or mesh duffel because it drains, dries, and rinses out easily. If you fly to dive even once a year, a roller bag is the better first purchase because wheels save your back and shoulders through an airport and the structured shell protects a regulator and dive computer. Many divers end up owning both: a roller for travel and a light mesh bag that lives inside it for day to day use at the dive site.

A loaded dive roller almost always goes as checked baggage, and a full set of gear plus the bag itself can easily approach or pass the common 50 pound limit before you add anything else. Weigh the packed bag at home on a luggage scale. Wear your heaviest items such as boots and a jacket onto the plane, carry your regulator, computer, and mask in your hand luggage so they are safe if a bag goes missing, and favor a lighter bag if you are close to the limit. Fins, wetsuit, and BCD are the bulky weight, so a bag around 100 to 120 liters is usually plenty.

Salt water and trapped moisture are what kill a bag and make it stink. Rinse the bag inside and out with fresh water after saltwater trips, open every zipper and pocket, and let it dry fully in the shade before storing. Do not leave a wet wetsuit sealed inside for days. On rollers, rinse grit off the wheels and telescoping handle so they keep gliding, and store the bag unzipped and empty so the fabric and zippers are not under tension.

For a single recreational diver, a bag in the 90 to 120 liter range holds a complete open water kit including BCD, regulator, wetsuit, fins, mask, and boots with room to spare. Go smaller, around 60 to 80 liters, for a boat or day bag that only carries the essentials. Go larger, 130 liters and up, only if you pack a drysuit, dive as a couple out of one bag, or want a single bag to hold gear plus clothing. Bigger is not automatically better because a huge bag is easy to overfill past the airline weight limit.

For travel, yes. A full set of scuba gear is genuinely heavy, and dragging it across a large airport on a shoulder strap is miserable. Wheels and a telescoping handle turn that into an easy walk.
