Common questions

Jacket-style BCDs (air wraps around your sides) float you upright and stable at the surface and feel familiar because they're what most courses and rental fleets use, a safe default for new and occasional divers. Back-inflate BCDs put the air cell behind you for a flatter, more streamlined horizontal position underwater and less squeeze on your torso, but they push you slightly face-forward at the surface until you learn to lean back. If you already have a dozen dives and want better trim, go back-inflate; if you're just starting or dive a few times a year, a quality jacket is perfectly fine.

Most recreational single-tank divers are well served by 26–40 lbs of lift, and nearly every BCD in a size medium/large provides that. Lift requirements rise with a thicker wetsuit or drysuit, heavier steel tanks, and the amount of lead you carry.
